More than a century before America declared its independence, Dr. John Clarke was fighting for a principle that would become fundamental to the American experiment: Freedom of Conscience. His fight spanned decades, two continents, imprisonment, banishment, political upheaval, repeated setbacks, and years in London pressing Rhode Island’s cause before Parliament and the Crown.
Against extraordinary odds, Clarke ultimately prevailed. In 1663, King Charles II granted the Rhode Island Royal Charter containing Clarke’s unprecedented written guarantee of Religious Liberty—113 years before the founding of the United States.
